Thriving, Not Just Surviving: Young People Leading International Adolescent Health Week in 2024

In October 2024, something powerful happened. Across classrooms, community halls, digital spaces, and city streets in 42 countries, young people raised their voices with a shared message: adolescents deserve more than survival; they deserve to thrive. This was International Adolescent Health Week (IAHW) 2024, a global, youth-led movement coordinated by the International Association for Adolescent Health (IAAH) with support from the World Health Organization (WHO). Far from being a symbolic celebration, IAHW became a living, breathing demonstration of what is possible when young people are trusted to lead conversations about their own health, well-being, and future.
Guided by the theme “Thriving, Not Just Surviving: Building Adolescents’ Resilience,” the week challenged a narrow view of adolescent health. It called attention to mental well-being, safe and supportive environments, and real opportunities for growth—recognizing that resilience is not something young people build alone, but something nurtured by families, communities, systems, and policies.
A Youth-Led Global Movement
IAHW 2024 reached 42 countries through the Youth Ambassador Programme, bringing together young people aged 16–24. From more than 500 applications, 54 Youth Ambassadors were selected to lead activities in their communities and online. They represented diverse regions, with strong participation from Africa and Asia, as well as growing engagement from Europe, the Americas, and Oceania. Young people weren’t just involved, they were in the lead. Youth Ambassadors helped shape the theme and shared messages rooted in their own lived experiences.
Youth Voices in Action
Throughout the week, Youth Ambassadors organized workshops, webinars, community discussions, creative sessions, and social media campaigns. Topics ranged from mental health and resilience to hygiene, disability inclusion, substance use, and life skills. Despite challenges, ambassadors found creative ways to engage their communities. Digital platforms like Instagram and X played a major role, amplifying youth voices and raising awareness of adolescent health issues worldwide.
Looking Ahead
IAHW 2024 showed the power of trusting young people to lead. With the momentum continuing into IAHW 2025, the message remains clear: adolescents deserve the support, space, and opportunities to thrive not just survive.
