Susan Sawyer

Susan M Sawyer is the immediate past president of the International Association for Adolescent Health. This follows her term as the 8th president from 2017-21 and two terms as the vice president of IAAH (Oceania) from 2010-2017. Susan is based in Australia and holds the Geoff and Helen Handbury Chair of Adolescent Health in the Department of Paediatrics at The University of Melbourne. She is the director of the Centre for Adolescent Health at the Royal Children’s Hospital, a World Health Organization collaborating centre for adolescent health, and the team leader for adolescent health research at the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute. An experienced adolescent physician, Susan has contributed to advancing the field of adolescent health and medicine in Australia, the Asia Pacific region and globally through research that aims to understand, identify and respond to adolescents’ and young adults’ health needs. Susan led the development of a free Massive Open Online Course on global adolescent health in 2015 and is the senior academic behind the University of Melbourne’s postgraduate courses in adolescent health and development. She is widely published including co-leading two series on adolescent health for The Lancet (2007, 2012) and the Lancet Commission on Adolescent Health (2016). She is a member of the editorial advisory boards of the Medical Journal of Australia, the Journal of Adolescent Health and Medicine, and Lancet Child and Adolescent Health.
